Speed only describes how fast something is moving.
Velocity describes both speed and direction of an object.
Even if the speed remains constant, the velocity changes because the direction changes.
Ways to change velocity
- change direction
- slow down
- speed up
- change speed and direction
Acceleration is the rate of change of velocity. Acceleration can occur through a change in speed or a change in direction. If the acceleration is in the same direction as the velocity, then the dragster speeds up. Its acceleration is positive. If they are in opposite directions, then the dragster slows down. Its acceleration is negative.
